OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc. Showcases AcceleDent at the World Federation of Orthodontists 7th International Orthodontic Congress in Sydney, Australia
Houston, TX, February 19, 2010 – OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent System, which is an acceleration device to enhance orthodontics, recently exhibited at the 7th International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) in Sydney, Australia, which is held by the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) every five years. The 8th IOC in 2015 will be hosted in London.
AcceleDent is a simple dental device that orthodontic patients wear in the mouth for 20 minutes daily to accelerate tooth movement. Michael Kaufman, VP Business Development & Marketing at OrthoAccel, commented, “The purpose of our visit to Australia was two-fold. We were able to introduce AcceleDent to the Australian market and visit with a number of local orthodontic specialists. At the same time, because of the international attendance, it provided an opportunity to learn more about other global markets that may be of interest in the future as we grow.”
A Phase I clinical trial in 2008 in Houston, TX demonstrated device safety. Dr. Chung H. Kau, DDS, MScD, MBA, PhD, M Orth, FDS, FFD (Ortho), FAMS (Ortho), the principle investigator, was invited to Sydney as a speaker by the WFO. In discussing AcceleDent with his colleagues, he observed, “I was encouraged by how well tolerated the device was by patients – teenagers and adults alike.”
Kaufman continued, “The conference exceeded our expectations; we presented and discussed AcceleDent with over 250 orthodontists from all over the world who visited our exhibit. Additionally, we validated a high level of interest in the Australian market and hope to begin shipping product to customers in the second quarter, with partnership with an experienced and well respected local distributor being the most likely channel.” OrthoAccel was granted clearance by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration in late 2009. Plans are to make AcceleDent available on a limited basis to select Australian orthodontic specialists.
The first case in private practice was initiated in October 2009 in the UK, following EU approval. Dr. Gerry Bellman, who is currently treating that particular patient, was in Sydney for the IOC. “I continue to be impressed by the ease in which patients accept the appliance and the positive feedback from them when they use it. We are anticipating faster case finishing. Safely getting braces off sooner is important to both doctor and patient,” remarked Dr. Bellman.
OrthoAccel is anticipating the conclusion of another US clinical trial at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio with a target completion date later in 2010.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Thousands of people get braces every year. Now, one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 18. Now there’s a new device that could help get rid of braces in half the time. Nobody likes the time spent waiting for braces to come off. So it’s good news that researchers are testing a new device that shakes teeth back into shape and gets metal off your mouth faster than ever.

From the day 14-year-old Alyssa Uecker got her braces, she’s had one very important question: “When were they coming off?” These braces are designed to straighten Alyssa’s teeth in about two years. In a clinical trial, she’s testing a new device that could move up the deadline. In the study, she bites down on a new device for 20 minutes every day. It delivers low-frequency vibration to her teeth. Researchers believe it stimulates bone remodeling and speeds up the straightening process.

“Vibrations, when they are applied to the bone, there is a solid body of evidence in clinical trials and from experiments in humans and animals that the bone metabolism accelerates,” said orthodontist Dubravko Pavlin. “It is faster. The bone remodels at a faster rate.”

How much faster?

“If we are talking about the average orthodontic treatment being maybe 24 months, 24 to 26 months, that would mean that we can shorten that treatment to maybe between 12 and 16 months,” said Pavlin.

After six months, Alyssa’s teeth are making progress. “It’s pretty exciting thinking that you might be able to get your braces off sooner just because of one little vibration movement every night,” said Alyssa. Now she looks forward to smiling and eating without all the metal in her mouth — a young woman hoping for a shorter path to a prettier smile.

Tests have shown the battery-operated AcceleDent device is safe for children and adults, but it’s still pending FDA approval. Researchers are testing the device to see exactly how much difference it can make for orthodontic patients.

BRACES BACKGROUND: According to the American Association of Orthodontists, since the time of the ancient Greeks, people have been using base metals to improve the look of teeth. The reasons for braces are not always cosmetic, but rather necessary for an effective bite, effective chewing and improved speech. Orthodontists say straight teeth are easier to clean and often last longer than crooked teeth. Straight teeth also contribute to healthy gums and alleviate or prevent health problems.

HOW BRACES WORK: Braces serve as an orthodontic treatment that exerts gentle pressure on teeth over time to straighten the teeth. Braces have three basic parts: brackets, which are attached to each tooth; bonding/bands, which attach the bracket to the tooth; and the arch wire, a thin metal wire that runs from bracket to bracket. Today braces can be attached to the front or the back of teeth, and some options are transparent. Braces aren’t just for kinds anymore — one in five orthodontic patients is now older than 18, according to the American Association of Orthodontists.

ACCELEDENT: AcceleDent is an orthodontic treatment that can shorten the time braces are on a patient. The concept behind the treatment is low-frequency vibrations, which, when applied to the bone, boost bone metabolism. By boosting bone metabolism, bone remodels at a faster rate. Inspired by the use of a similar treatment in the treatment of osteoporosis, the University of Texas is the first to apply the concept to orthodontics. AcceleDent involves a 20-minute inaudible vibration session every day. During a session, the patient bites onto a plate that gives off vibrations. Clinical trials with the system are being conducted at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Dubravko Pavlin, D.M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, says he believes this procedure could shorten treatment time with braces from 24 to 26 months to 12 to 16 months.

“So far, we do not have any solid data that we can base answers on yet,” said Pavlin. “We can tell you that the patients tolerate the appliance very well. It has been worn regularly, and we haven’t seen any major problems.”

Houston, TX, December 4, 2009 – OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent System, which is an acceleration device to enhance orthodontics, announced the availability of a new Continuing Education course published by PennWell Corporation, a leader in professional education for many industries, including medicine and dentistry. The course focuses on patient views about orthodontic treatment, a summary of treatment biomechanics, factors that increase treatment duration, and the role that pulsatile forces can play in modulating periodontal biology and accelerating orthodontic treatment. The technology supporting the AcceleDent System involves the application of pulsatile forces. The course can be accessed directly through PennWell’s dental education website http://www.ineedce.com/

AcceleDent is a simple, removable dental device that an orthodontic patient wears in the mouth for 20 minutes daily to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. A Phase I clinical trial in 2008 in Houston, Texas demonstrated the safety of the device. The first case in private practice was initiated in October 2009 in the UK, following EU approval.

The course is a peer-reviewed publication titled “Advances in Orthodontic Treatment,” and was authored by Jeremy J. Mao, DDS, PhD, who recently lectured internationally on the biological action of pulsatile force, and Chung H. Kau, DDS, MScD, MBA, PhD, MOrth, FDS, FFD (Ortho), FAMS (Ortho), who oversaw the Phase I clinical trial that featured the first use of the AcceleDent technology in patients at the University of Texas Dental Branch. The course is intended for orthodontists and dental professionals and awards 4 CE credits. PennWell is an ADA CERP (Continuing Education Recognition Program) provider.

Dr. Jeremy Mao observed, “We believe that a great deal of knowledge has been unveiled in recent years as it relates to pulsatile forces and biological response of alveolar bone. The scientific data have important implications in the rate of orthodontic treatment. This course is a timely opportunity to create awareness around these concepts.” He continued, “The Phase I clinical trial conducted at the University of Texas Dental Branch represents scientific validation of years of animal data on the effectiveness of pulsatile forces.” Brent Tarver, VP Clinical Affairs for the Company added, “OrthoAccel is committed to its investment in a clinical strategy that is ultimately intended to not only elaborate the scientific basis for AcceleDent, but also discover new ways to improve orthodontic care.”

OrthoAccel is presently controlling availability of AcceleDent in the UK to a select group of orthodontic specialists before a broader release there in October 2010.

Houston, TX, November 18, 2009 – OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent System, which is an acceleration device to enhance orthodontics, announced that Jeremy J. Mao, DDS, PhD, Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Board, just completed a lecture tour in the United Kingdom, where he was invited to give three presentations over three days at three separate venues. AcceleDent is a simple, removable dental device that patients wear in the mouth for twenty minutes daily to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. The first case in private practice was initiated last month in the United Kingdom.

The content of the UK lectures was focused on the biological basis for accelerating tooth movement that AcceleDent delivers as a benefit. “Interestingly, these scientific principles have been used for decades in orthopaedic applications, with long bones, for example,” explained Dr. Mao. “Regulating the biology of bone tissue with vibrational force is actually nothing new, although OrthoAccel represents the first development toward an orthodontic benefit.”

Dr. Mao’s visits in the UK included two prestigious academic institutions and one annual conference. The lectures were given at the King’s Dental Institute at King’s College London, the Eastman Dental Institute at the University College London, and the British Orthodontic Society’s 2009 Orthodontic Specialist Group annual meeting which was held at The Royal College of Physicians in London.

Mike Kaufman, VP Marketing for OrthoAccel commented, “We are very excited about Dr. Mao’s podium lectures to help us continue establishing credibility for this exciting new product in one of our most important markets.”

Dr. Mao is the original inventor of the core OrthoAccel technology. When OrthoAccel was formed in 2007, he was recognized with the prestigious Iwao Yasuda Award for his discoveries in mechanical modulation of skeletal growth, among other areas. It represents the highest honor given by the Society for Physical Regulation in Biology and Medicine to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of biomedical research.

In his lecture series, Dr. Mao challenged, “Don’t think like an orthodontist; think like an engineer for a moment. We move teeth with forces. A physical force has five fundamental properties: magnitude, direction, point of application, duration, and frequency.” Regarding the introduction of AcceleDent which applies vibration at certain frequencies to the teeth to speed up movement, he added, “As orthodontists, we have studied all of these characteristics extensively with the exception of frequency – until now. A device that delivers forces with rapidly oscillating frequencies leads us to a new area of clinical application.” Dr. Mao currently serves as the Director of the Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine Laboratory and Professor at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York.

Houston, TX, November 11, 2009 – OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent System, which is an acceleration device to enhance orthodontics, announced that its application to market and distribute the product for sale was approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). AcceleDent is classified as an, “orthodontic appliance system,” in Australia.

AcceleDent is a simple, removable dental device that patients wear in the mouth for twenty minutes daily. It generates a light microvibration force which modulates the bone tissue remodeling process and accelerates orthodontic tooth movement. The device is hands-free and allows the user flexibility to carry out most routine tasks during the twenty-minute use session. The first case in private practice was initiated last month in the United Kingdom, OrthoAccel’s first commercial market.

Brent Tarver, VP Clinical Affairs at OrthoAccel, remarked, “We consider this regulatory clearance to be an important part of our strategic plans, particularly as we begin focusing on the conclusion of the pivotal trial next year for FDA clearance here in the United States.” AcceleDent has been added to the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Mike Kaufman, VP Business Development at OrthoAccel, added, “We will be attending the World Federation of Orthodontists 7th International Orthodontic Congress in February next year in Sydney. Australia is a progressive orthodontic market that is very open to credible and meaningful new technologies.”

Results from the initial clinical trial demonstrated an overall tooth movement rate of 2.1 mm per month, which is 30% to 50% faster than what is reported in the literature. This same study further demonstrated the safety of the AcceleDent System through a detailed measurement and statistical analysis of root resorption, yielding mean values of below 0.5 mm. It should be noted that 0.5 mm is well below the level of 2 mm, or one-third of the root length, considered clinically significant by researchers.

Jeremy J. Mao, DDS, PhD is the original inventor of the core OrthoAccel technology and also currently serves as the Chairman of the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board. He commented, “The Phase I Human Clinical Trial conducted at the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston validates our previously published animal data that serves as the foundation for the concept that orthodontic treatment can be safely accelerated.” Dr. Mao also serves as the Director of the Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine Laboratory and Professor at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York.

OrthoAccel is presently controlling availability of AcceleDent in the United Kingdom to a select group of orthodontic specialists before a broader release in October 2010. The Company reports plans to take a similar approach with the Australian market.

Houston, TX, October 22, 2009 – OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent System, which is an acceleration device for orthodontics, has just completed the sale of the product to several key opinion leaders in the United Kingdom. Doctors Gerry Bellman, Angelos Alvanos and Asif Chatoo are in private practice in the London area while Dr. Lars Christensen is in private practice in Oxford.

Dr. Bellman, an orthodontic specialist, is the first to treat a patient outside of the USA where the company has been conducting human clinical trials. The patient is a 28 year old female initially being treated with a fixed orthodontic appliance and with a treatment plan to later include a clear aligner (Invisalign). The doctor and patient were very excited by how easy the AcceleDent System is to use and look forward to a significantly reduced treatment time. Dr. Bellman commented, “I was very excited to fit the first AcceleDent appliance to a patient in the UK. It was extremely easy to fit and my patient found it very simple to position in her mouth and use. I look forward to monitoring the accelerated movement of her teeth over the coming months.”

Results from the initial clinical trial demonstrated an overall tooth movement rate of 2.1 mm per month, which is 30% to 50% faster than what is reported in the literature. This same study further demonstrated the safety of the AcceleDent System through a detailed measurement and statistical analysis of root resorption yielding mean values below 0.5 mm. It should be noted that 0.5 mm is well below the levels of 2 mm, or one-third of the root length, considered to be clinically significant by researchers.

OrthoAccel Technologies, a start-up company, is presently controlling the availability of the AcceleDent System in the UK to a select group of orthodontic specialists. In this manner the product presentation, doctor support materials and company logistical systems can be fine tuned before a broader market release planned for October 2010.

About OrthoAccel
Based in Houston, Texas, OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., is the developer of the AcceleDent System, a new device for enhancing orthodontic care. This device has been studied to verify that it safely reduces treatment duration for wearing braces by applying gentle pulsing forces in combination with standard orthodontics to move teeth faster through accelerated bone remodeling. Importantly, the device works complimentary with all existing orthodontic technologies.

Houston, TX, September 28, 2009 – OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent System, which is an acceleration device for orthodontics, attended the British Orthodontic Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, to initiate the limited release of the AcceleDent System in the UK.

The conference, which was held September 13 -15, is the largest dental specialist meeting in the UK. Speakers from all over the world attended the conference and presented on various clinical and research topics. In addition to orthodontists and dental specialists attending the conference, numerous orthodontic nurses and technicians were in attendance. OrthoAccel had a booth at the conference and reported favorable engagement with orthodontists. Michael Kaufman, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, said, “The British Orthodontic Conference exceeded our expectations. There was a lot of buzz at the meeting with regard to the AcceleDent System, the booth was very busy, and the doctors showed genuine interest in this new product. The BOC proved to be a great venue to help us progress our efforts towards a limited release in the UK.”

Since the AcceleDent System is still undergoing clinical research studies in the US, OrthoAccel made the decision to launch the device in the UK. Brent Tarver, Vice President of Clinical Affairs and Technology Development, said, “originally, we planned to focus on our U.S. clinical studies and FDA submission and then move into other markets; however, several UK orthodontists expressed an interest in the device in late 2008. We received our CE Mark in April 2009 and decided to market the device in the UK while we continue working on our U.S. market clearance, which we expect in late 2010 or early 2011. Currently the device is not for sale in the U.S.”

Dr. Gerry Bellman, a London based orthodontic specialist, attended the meeting as a company consultant and fielded a variety of questions from inquiring doctors. “It was very exciting to be at the AcceleDent booth and interact with some of the leading U.S. researchers in the field of cyclic force technology and the positive effects on bone. Also, it was very gratifying to have great discussions and interest from the British Orthodontic community.”

OrthoAccel had an invaluable experience at the British Orthodontic Conference. Mike Lowe, CEO of OrthoAccel, said, “our expectations were exceeded in two ways at this year’s BOC. First, we were extremely pleased with the positive nature of feedback from orthodontists and ‘welcoming attitude’ toward AcceleDent and innovation in general designed to improve orthodontic care for patients. Second, the team was just so impressed with the world class professionalism and organization of every conference detail managed by the British Orthodontic Society, the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, and everyone else who played a role. We look forward to attending Brighton in 2010.”
